These baskets are made in the remote Binga district of northern Zimbabwe, home to the Tonga people. Many Tonga women use traditional weaving techniques to make the patterned baskets, with an over-and-under weave and a coiled rim finished in a herringbone pattern. The largest baskets are still used by the Tonga people for their original purpose of winnowing grain.
